Nore Hill

The walk up Nore Hill takes about forty minutes from Arundel, and it's genuinely worth your legs complaining about. You're climbing to 765 feet, which doesn't sound much until you're doing it in Sussex, where the South Downs aren't exactly Alps but they feel proper steep when the sun's on your back. The view from the top stretches across the Weald toward the coast - on a clear day you can see right down to the Channel. It's the kind of view that makes you understand why people bothered living up here in the first place.

This is walker territory, no question. Families with under-tens might find the climb a slog, but anyone who can manage a steady uphill trek will get something from it. The path's well-trodden and the gradient, while relentless, doesn't require scrambling or technical bits. Come early if you can - the ridge gets busy with locals once the afternoon rolls around, and the light's better before lunch anyway.

It's free, naturally, being open countryside. Allow a couple of hours if you want to sit up top and actually enjoy the view rather than just gasping for breath. If you're camped at Old Farm Slindon or one of the nearby sites - Woodfire at Westerlands or Graffham are both close - this makes an excellent half-day walk. Pair it with the town itself for a proper outing. Arundel's got enough going on that you won't be kicking your heels afterward.
