Vixen Tor

The tor itself isn't massive - you're looking at roughly 300 metres of rough moorland scramble from the nearest car park - but the payoff is proper worth the effort. Vixen Tor sits on Dartmoor near Tavistock, all granite outcrop and windswept views across the moorland. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a misty day, which is most days round here, it feels genuinely atmospheric in a way that makes you understand why people used to tell stories about these places.

It's not a manicured attraction. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no facilities to speak of. You park up, you walk, you clamber a bit if the mood takes you, and that's the lot. Families with young kids might find the scramble tedious, and it's definitely not a short pop-in sort of place. But for walkers, hill enthusiasts, and anyone who actually wants to earn their views rather than drive past them, it's compelling stuff.

The moorland around here is proper dramatic - all open sky and isolation. If you're staying at Langstone Manor Holiday Park just down the road, you're perfectly placed. Combine it with other Dartmoor walks and you've got yourself a solid day out. Go early if you can, especially in summer, because the car parks fill up and the weather can turn quickly. Allow a good couple of hours to do it justice.
