Viscount Dundee Memorial

The Viscount Dundee Memorial sits on a hillside near Pitlochry, a modest stone monument to John Graham of Claverhouse, the 17th-century cavalry commander known as 'Bonnie Dundee'. Unless you're properly into Scottish history, this one requires some homework first - the man himself was controversial, to put it mildly, and the memorial doesn't exactly draw crowds.

What you get is a quiet walk through moorland to reach the stone itself. It's the sort of place where you'll hear birds and wind rather than tour groups. The view across Perthshire unfolds nicely once you're up there, which is reason enough for walkers who are already in the area. Allow an hour from Pitlochry town centre including the walk both ways.

This isn't a 'stop the car and have a look' sort of site. You need to want to be there. History enthusiasts and serious walkers will find it worthwhile - particularly those following the Jacobite trail through Tayside. Families with young kids will likely find it underwhelming unless they're the type who enjoy off-the-beaten-path rambling.

If you're camping at Faskally Woods or River Tilt Park nearby, it's an easy morning expedition to combine with exploring Pitlochry itself. Blair Castle is just down the road if you want something with more obvious attractions to keep everyone occupied.
