Linn of Tummel car park

The car park at Linn of Tummel is where most people start their walk down to the river - and frankly, it's the sensible place to leave your car before tackling the path. From here you're a short walk from one of Perthshire's proper river gorges, where the Tummel crashes through a narrow ravine with real force, especially after heavy rain.

It's essentially a layby with parking, nothing fancy, but it gives you access to something genuinely worth seeing. The walk down takes maybe ten minutes - nothing strenuous - and you emerge at the gorge itself. The water churns through dark rock, the spray hits your face, and on a grey Scottish afternoon it feels properly wild. Kids usually love it because they can actually see something dramatic happen, not just stand looking at a distant view.

Allow half an hour to forty minutes if you're just popping down for a look. Bring a waterproof because the path gets damp and the spray reaches further than you'd expect. The car park is free - it's just a lay-by - and you can arrive whenever suits you.

If you're based at Faskally Woods, just half a mile away, this makes an easy morning walk before heading into Pitlochry proper. It's the sort of thing that takes twenty minutes of your time and sticks with you longer than most tourist attractions. Not Instagram gold, just genuinely dramatic Scottish scenery.
