Meall a' Charra

The walk up Meall a' Charra from Pitlochry is straightforward and rewarding - nothing technical, just solid hillwalking. You're looking at roughly two hours up, maybe ninety minutes down if your knees are kind, and the views across the Tay Valley and towards the Highlands proper make it worth the effort. The peak itself isn't dramatic - it's more the sense of space around it that gets you.

This is proper walker territory. Families with teenagers who can manage a steady climb will find it manageable, though younger kids might find the latter stages a bit of a slog. The route starts from accessible trailheads near Pitlochry and doesn't require scrambling or exposed sections, which is exactly what you want on a day when the weather's turning.

Timing matters. Go on a clear day or don't bother - cloud cover here isn't moody, it's just dull. Early morning gets you away from the afternoon shuffle, especially during summer holidays. There's no cafe on top (obviously), so bring proper supplies.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks round Pitlochry - Faskally Woods or Milton of Fonab are closest - this works as a half-day outing before heading into town for lunch.
