Soldiers Leap

The River Tilt tears through a narrow gorge near Pitlochry, and Soldiers Leap marks the spot where - according to local legend - a fleeing redcoat jumped clean across the chasm during the 1745 Jacobite Rising. Whether he actually made it or simply drowned in the attempt rather depends on who's telling the story, but the gap itself is genuinely impressive, maybe 18 feet across at its widest point.

It's a short walk from the car park down to the riverbank - nothing demanding, though the paths can be muddy after rain. The actual leap is best viewed from the marked viewpoint rather than attempting anything heroic yourself. The water below moves fast and cold, so this is very much a look-and-move-on affair unless you're particularly gripped by Jacobite history.

Historic types will find the location compelling, and the surrounding woodland makes it an easy inclusion if you're already exploring the area around Pitlochry and Blair Atholl. It won't detain you for more than 20 minutes, but paired with a walk along the Tilt or a visit to nearby Blair Castle, it slots in nicely. If you're camping at Faskally Woods or one of the other parks within a few miles, it's worth a detour - it's free, easily accessible, and gives real shape to the Highland stories you've probably heard.

That said, manage expectations. It's a good story and a genuine location rather than a major spectacle. Come in summer when the paths are drier and you can appreciate the gorge properly.
