Faskally Forest

The forest spreads across a steep hillside above Pitlochry, and if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Faskally Woods is practically on your doorstep - it's an obvious choice for a morning walk. Larch and pine dominate the slopes, threading down towards Loch Faskally below, and the whole place has that dark, quiet quality Scottish forests do so well.

What you're actually doing here is tramping through managed woodland with proper walking trails that range from gentle riverside strolls to proper leg-burners up the hillside. The loch views appear suddenly through the trees, which is the main draw - it's not dramatically scenic, but it's restful. The forest attracts walkers far more than sightseers; families with younger kids might find an hour enough before boredom sets in, though if you're the type who enjoys being among trees without needing a destination, you could easily spend a half-day here.

Access is free and you can park near the forest edge. Spring brings out the bluebells, autumn turns it golden. The trails link well with the broader Pitlochry walking network, so if you're basing yourself at Milton Of Fonab or Blair Castle further afield, it's worth factoring in as part of a larger day out. The walk along the Pass of Killiecrankie nearby is the superior hike if you want real drama, but Faskally Forest is the better choice if you want something low-key and close to your accommodation. Not spectacular, but solid.
