Vestey's Beach

The moment you round the bend and see Vestey's Beach, you understand why people bother with the Scottish north coast. It's a proper crescent of golden sand backed by low dunes and heather, with views across to Ben Stack rising in the distance - moorland drama without the crowds you'd get down south.

You can walk the length of it in twenty minutes or so, paddling if the weather's on your side. The water's cold year-round, mind you. Swimming is doable in summer, though only the committed venture past ankle depth. What makes it work is the peace. Even in July, it's nothing like the tourist machines of the Moray Firth. You get proper Highland air and the kind of silence that feels almost loud.

This isn't a beach for thrill-seekers. There are no ice cream vans, no arcades, no lifeguards. It's magnificent if you like wild coastline and solitude; if you need facilities, you'll be disappointed. The nearest amenities are in Sutherland, fifteen minutes' drive back inland. Clachtoll Beach Campsite sits just 1.7 miles away and is your best bet for a proper base - excellent reviews, right on the edge of things.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from it. Young kids might lose interest after an hour unless they're the type to hunt for shells and build things. Go when you need space to breathe, not when you need entertainment. Spring and autumn offer the best light for the hills.
