Upwaltham Hill

The walk up Upwaltham Hill rewards you with one of those rare Sussex views that actually justifies the climb. It's nothing mad - just 160-odd metres of downland near Petworth - but from the top the Weald spreads out properly, and on a clear day you can see right across to the South Downs. The hill itself is open grassland, well-walked and straightforward, with the sort of gentle slope that keeps things interesting without breaking your legs.

Historically, there's a Saxon church in the village below - St Mary's - which adds a bit of weight to the walk if you're into that sort of thing. Most people do this as a 30-minute push from the car park and call it done, though you could easily spend longer wandering the local footpaths if the mood takes you. It's not a "peak" in any dramatic sense, but it's the sort of spot that walkers and families with older kids will genuinely enjoy. Younger children might find it a bit dull unless you make a game of spotting landmarks from the top.

Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site, just 3.7 miles away with ratings consistently over 4.8, makes an excellent base for exploring this corner of Sussex. Woodfire at Westerlands is slightly closer and equally well-regarded. From either site, you could tackle Upwaltham Hill in the morning, then spend the afternoon pottering around Petworth itself - the town has proper charm and the National Trust house is worth an afternoon.
