Upperton Gate, Petworth Park

The gate itself is easy to miss - just a modest entrance point on the boundary of Petworth Park, but it marks the start of something rather special. This is where the nature reserve proper begins, and the landscape opens up into rolling parkland and woodland that feels genuinely wild compared to the manicured grounds closer to Petworth House.

Walkers and serious birdwatchers will get the most from Upperton Gate. The trails that branch off are proper country rambles - you're looking at a good couple of hours minimum if you want to see anything worthwhile, and longer if you're serious about spotting the deer that roam here. The woodland canopy is thick in summer, which means decent shelter if the weather turns, but also means you'll miss some of the open vistas that make Petworth special in spring and autumn.

It's free to access, which is brilliant, and there's rarely a crowd at this particular entrance - most visitors stick to the main house and gardens. If you're based at Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Wakestone & Wild Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent morning walk before heading back for lunch. The reserve is quietest midweek and early morning.

Honestly? It's worth the detour if you're already in the Petworth area and fancy stretching your legs properly. But don't expect dramatic scenery or facilities - bring proper shoes, water, and a map. It's the sort of place that rewards patience and observation rather than delivering instant gratification.
