Upper Ogden Reservoir

The water here sits high up in the Pennines, surrounded by proper wild moorland that feels a world away from Nelson just down the valley. Upper Ogden Reservoir is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a functional bit of Lancashire infrastructure that's somehow become rather lovely for a walk.

There's a footpath that runs around the water's edge, giving you decent views across the valley without requiring anything too strenuous. The reservoir itself is calm, occasionally broken by the odd angler, and on a clear day you can see right across the moorland. It's not a destination attraction like Pendle Hill or the tourist honeypots further east, but that's rather the point. You get the space to yourself and a genuine sense of the high moors.

Families will find it manageable - the walk is straightforward and there's something hypnotic about water and open sky for kids. Walkers obviously get the most out of it, especially if you're combining it with Pendle View Holiday Park's location as a base for exploring the wider area. Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site, a few miles south, puts you well-positioned for tackling both this and the bigger fell walks nearby.

It's free and accessible year-round, though winter can be grim up there - bleak wind and low cloud. Spring or autumn offer the best light. Allow an hour for a gentle circuit. Not worth a dedicated trip from elsewhere, but absolutely worth the detour if you're staying locally and fancy a break from the tourist trail.
