Upper Grateley Wood

The woodland around Upper Grateley feels properly ancient - the sort of place where you half expect to bump into someone from the Saxon era. It's managed woodland with good walking paths threading through beech and oak, and the canopy gets thick enough in summer that you'll need the shade. There's nothing flashy about it - no visitor centre, no cafe, no interpretation boards - which is rather the point. You're here to walk, maybe spot woodland birds, and let your head clear.

For families with younger kids, an hour is probably enough before they start asking if you're nearly done. Older children and serious walkers will find proper value in a longer ramble, particularly if you link it with other routes in the area. The paths are manageable rather than challenging, which suits most fitness levels.

It's free to access and open year-round, though spring and autumn are when it really sings - less muddy than winter, less crowded than summer. You could easily spend two to three hours here if you're the contemplative type.

If you're based at Salisbury Hillside or Stockbridge View just down the road, this makes a proper morning or afternoon walk without requiring a drive. The nearest town is Stockbridge, a small market town with decent pubs and shops for supplies. Don't come expecting facilities or manicured trails - come for genuine woodland and the chance to actually think.
