Great Wood

Great Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Stockbridge, the sort of place that rewards an afternoon ramble without demanding a full expedition. You get mixed broadleaf forest - oak, beech, ash - with decent paths that wind through without being manicured into submission. It's the real Hampshire countryside, not a theme park version of it.

Walkers will appreciate the relative quiet and the chance to spot woodland birds if you're patient and keep your voice down. Kids won't be bored for an hour or so, particularly if they're at the age where fallen logs and stream-spotting still register as entertainment. There's something straightforward about it that works well as a morning walk before heading into Stockbridge for lunch.

The main appeal is that it slots nicely into a park holiday in the area. You're close enough to Adhurst Yurts or Feather Down Manor Farm that a morning here works as a gentle break from camp life - exercise without overcommitting. The forest is dense enough to feel like a proper escape, even though you're essentially in rural Hampshire rather than deep wilderness.

Access details are thin on the ground, but it's clearly a local resource rather than a ticketed attraction. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for a comfortable walk, longer if you fancy sitting around. Spring's probably best when the woodland floor lights up, but it's walkable year-round if you don't mind mud. Bit of a baseline woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, but solid enough if you're already nearby.
