Drove Copse

Drove Copse is a modest woodland patch near Stockbridge that won't take long to explore but offers proper quiet if you're after a break from the open chalk downland that dominates this corner of Wiltshire. The trees are mixed - beech, oak, and ash mostly - and there's enough of a canopy to feel genuinely separated from the surrounding farmland, even though you're never more than a few minutes' walk from fields.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a destination in itself. Walkers do well here; the paths are straightforward and muddy enough in winter to feel authentic. History buffs might find the woodland itself unremarkable, but it sits within countryside thick with Iron Age earthworks and old routeways. Kids will manage an hour easily enough before getting restless - there's nothing interactive, no water features, just trees and the occasional bird.

No entrance fee that I'm aware of, and you can visit whenever you fancy. Allow an hour for a proper circuit, or twenty minutes if you're just cutting through. The real value comes if you're staying nearby - The Meadow Glamping, Stockbridge View, or Green Hill Farm Holiday Village are all within five miles - and want to break up a day of walking the Test Valley or exploring the chalk downs. It's practical rather than spectacular, the kind of stop that makes sense when you're already in the area, not the reason you'd journey here. Worth a detour if you're at one of the local parks and fancy a change of scenery.
