Fir Hill

Walk up Fir Hill and you get proper views across the Test Valley - on a clear day you can trace the river's curves all the way south. It's not a dramatic summit, more a gentle climb through Hampshire's rolling chalk downland, but that's precisely what makes it manageable for most people without needing scrambling boots or specialist kit.

The walk takes about an hour at a reasonable pace, and families with older kids will find it straightforward. Younger children might struggle with the gradient in summer heat, but autumn's a different story. What strikes you most is the lack of crowds - this isn't a honeypot like so many South Coast peaks. You'll likely have the ridge to yourself, which feels rare these days.

The fir trees give way to open grassland near the summit, and that's where the landscape really opens up. Bring a map if you're interested in spotting landmarks, though honestly just sitting with a flask and a sandwich is equally valid.

Stockbridge's the nearest proper town, only a few miles off - useful for supplies before heading up. If you're staying at The Meadow Glamping or Stockbridge View, both within spitting distance, this makes an excellent afternoon addition to your park holiday without requiring a car journey. The Salisbury Hillside site, further out at 5 miles, works too if you're combining it with other Test Valley walks.

Free to access, no facilities on the hill itself, and best done when the ground's not waterlogged. Go for the walk itself, not for Instagram moments.
