Upper Fitz Park

The River Greta runs through Upper Fitz Park on the edge of Keswick, and it's a proper riverside walk rather than a formal garden or manicured attraction. You get woodland paths, open grassland, and the river itself - good for spotting dippers and herons if you're patient enough. The park sits between Keswick town centre and the surrounding fells, making it an obvious warm-up walk before heading into the Lake District proper, or a gentler option if the weather's turned or you need a break from climbing.

It's free and open whenever you fancy it - no gates, no admission fees. Allow an hour for a relaxed potter, maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping to sketch or watch the water. Families with younger kids will manage it fine; the terrain's not demanding, though it can get muddy after rain. This isn't a destination in its own right, but it's genuinely useful as part of a Keswick weekend. The caravan parks at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club and Castlerigg Hall are both within a mile, so you could easily walk here from your pitch for a morning stroll before proper hiking.

The park's best visited spring through autumn when the woodland's greener and the water levels are lower. Winter brings more water but fewer birds and that drab feeling British woodlands get. Worth doing once if you're based locally - it's convenient, quiet, and there's something settling about riverside walks before tackling the bigger peaks around Helvellyn or Skiddaw.
