About Ullock Pike
The walk itself is proper fell terrain - grassy slopes, the occasional rocky section - nothing technical but it demands boots and decent fitness. You're walking open moorland most of the way, so exposure to weather is real. Families with older kids manage it fine. Toddlers will struggle. History buffs won't find much here, walkers absolutely will.
Free to climb, obviously. Allow two to two-and-a-half hours from start to finish including summit time. Go early if you can - the fell doesn't hold crowds but the car park does fill on weekends. Late autumn through early spring offers clearer air and fewer midges.
Stay at Kestrel Lodge Campsite, just 2.5 miles away, or push slightly further to Castlerigg Hall near Threlkeld if you want something with more facilities. Both position you well for exploring other fells in the northern lakes. Ullock Pike works best as part of a longer walking holiday rather than a standalone trip - pair it with Skiddaw or Blencathra when conditions are decent.
