Ughill Height

The walk up Ughill Height rewards you with views across the Peak District that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's a proper fell walk rather than a gentle stroll - the climb's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs, but nothing requiring specialist kit. From the summit you can see right across to Stanage Edge and beyond, with Sheffield's sprawl visible on the horizon if you squint. Most walkers allow two to three hours return from the nearest car park, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. It's free, obviously - it's a hill. The best time is early morning when the mist hasn't rolled in, or late afternoon when the light turns golden and warm. Families with older kids (say, ten plus) will manage it fine, though the little ones might grumble on the way down. Anyone based at East Peak Campsite or Fox Hagg Farm Campsite will find it's a decent morning's work and close enough not to eat into your day. The surrounding moorland can be boggy in winter, so go in drier months when the ground's firm. Bring water - there's nothing up there. The view alone justifies the huff and puff, though it's not the sort of place to spend hours. You'll be down and back to camp by lunchtime.
