Furnace Hill

The walk up to Furnace Hill from Sheffield's southwestern edge is straightforward enough, though it's hardly a dramatic scramble. You're looking at moorland terrain that rolls out across Derbyshire's edge - bracken and rough grass mostly, with decent views back towards the city once you've climbed a bit. The summit itself isn't marked by anything grand; it's more of a pause in the landscape than a destination, which some will find refreshingly honest and others might find slightly underwhelming.

This is solid walker territory. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - East Peak or Wyming Brook Farm are closest, under three miles away - it makes a proper morning exercise without demanding hours of your time. Allow ninety minutes for the round trip from the nearest car park, longer if you're dawdling and taking photos. The exposed moorland means weather matters here; on a clear day the visibility is decent, but when cloud rolls in you'll understand why people say these hills are moody rather than majestic.

It's the kind of walk locals do rather than tourists seek out specifically. Families with competent walkers will manage fine; younger children might get bored once the novelty of climbing wears off. There's nothing to buy at the top, no café, no visitor infrastructure - just space and air and the knowledge you've earned a decent view of the surrounding valleys. Worth doing if you're based at East Peak Campsite or exploring the wider Peak District edges around Sheffield, but don't rearrange your itinerary for it.
