Uamha Thuill

Getting to Uamha Thuill means a proper walk through Argyll's west coast landscape, and that's half the appeal. This sea cave sits tucked into the coastline near Oban, accessible only on foot - there's no road, no visitor centre, no gift shop. You're venturing into something genuinely wild.

The cave itself opens onto a shingle beach, and at low tide you can actually get inside and explore the chamber. It's not vast or cathedral-like, but there's something satisfying about discovering it yourself, scrambling over rocks without railings or interpretation boards telling you what to think. The view back out to sea once you're inside is rather good.

This is squarely for walkers and geology types rather than young kids in pushchairs. Allow a couple of hours return walk depending on your fitness, and time it for low tide - check the tidal charts before you head out, or you'll be wading back frustrated. It's free, naturally, because there's nothing there to charge for.

Staying at Oban Holiday Park puts you within reasonable reach for a half-day expedition, though Tanunda Pods or Maggie's Cabin might suit better if you want quieter surroundings. The cave works well as part of a broader Argyll coastal ramble rather than a destination in itself. Bit of an effort for what amounts to a rocky hole, but if you're already walking the coastline around Oban, absolutely worth the detour.
