Tyn-Y-Bryn

The walk up Tyn-Y-Bryn from Llanidloes rewards you with proper views across the Powys valleys - moorland stretches out in every direction, and on a clear day you can pick out the distant ridges that frame mid-Wales. It's a modest peak rather than a dramatic summit, but that's precisely why it works as a half-day outing without the scrambling or crowds you'd get elsewhere.

The ascent takes roughly an hour and a half depending on your fitness and which route you take from the town. The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy patches are standard even after decent weather - bring proper boots. What makes it worthwhile is the solitude. You'll rarely see more than a handful of other walkers, and the views genuinely open up once you're above the tree line.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination for casual strollers, and families with very young children will find the terrain a bit grinding, but anyone comfortable with a moderate hill walk should find their legs and lungs satisfied. Allow three to four hours for the round trip including stops.
