Brynposteg Hill

The walk up Brynposteg Hill takes you proper high into the Powys moorlands above Llanidloes, and on a clear day the views across Mid Wales are genuinely worth the leg work. It's not a mountain by any stretch - more a substantial fell that rises abruptly from the valley floor - but the payoff is a wide-open sweep of countryside that stretches all the way to the Cambrian range on the horizon.

You'll find the ascent straightforward enough, with clear paths that cattle have worn into the grass over decades. The whole thing takes about ninety minutes up and down if you're not rushing. It's the sort of walk that appeals to anyone who likes decent views without the full day commitment of a proper peak - families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might need carrying on the steeper bits near the top.

It's absolutely free to access, which is just as well because there's no cafe or visitor centre up there. That's part of its charm, actually. Come early morning when the mist is still lifting off the valley, or late afternoon when the light turns the fields gold. Avoid midday in summer if you can - the exposed summit gets baked and windless.

Stay at one of the camping spots nearby - Ty Llewelyn is barely a mile away - and build this into a proper walking weekend. You're well placed to tackle other routes across the moorland, and Llanidloes itself is a proper little market town worth an evening's exploration.
