Twyn Du

The walk up Twyn Du takes roughly ninety minutes from the car park near Brecon, and it's one of those climbs where the effort genuinely pays off. You're looking at a modest peak by Welsh standards - 512 metres - but what makes it worthwhile is the approach through open moorland and the views across the Beacons once you're up there. The path is clear enough, though boggy in patches, and the summit itself offers sight lines toward Pen y Ghent and across toward the Black Mountains.

Walkers will find this one rewarding without being brutal. Families with older kids (say, ten and up) can manage it fine if they're used to hills, though younger ones might grumble about the moorland stretches where there's not much to see bar the horizon. History types get less from Twyn Du itself - it's raw landscape rather than ruins - but the Brecon Beacons National Park context matters: you're walking through country that shaped local life for centuries.

Go early on a clear day. Cloud rolls in fast here, and the views vanish. It's free, naturally - just park responsibly and allow a full morning or early afternoon. The moorland can feel exposed, so dress for wind and possible rain whatever the forecast says.

Pencelli Castle Caravan & Camping Park sits just 2.9 miles away and offers a solid base for a longer stay exploring the Beacons. Cefn Cantref Campsite at 4.5 miles works equally well. Either gives you easy access to Twyn Du and the wider park network without needing to drive far each morning.
