Cambrian Cruisers Marina

The Brecon and Monmouth Canal runs through some of Wales' most underrated countryside, and Cambrian Cruisers Marina sits right on it near Brecon - a proper working boatyard where you can rent narrowboats for a few hours or several days. The marina itself isn't fancy, but that's rather the point. You're looking at a clutch of vessels moored along the water, a small office, and immediate access to one of Britain's gentlest canal stretches.

Walkers and cyclists will get the most from this. The towpath either side of the marina is excellent - flat, well-maintained, and heads towards Brecon town in one direction and through open moorland in the other. If you fancy a day out without the commitment of hiring a boat, the stretch around here is lovely for a three or four-hour ramble. Families with young kids might struggle with a full boat hire - the locks require attention and patience - but a shorter rental can work well on calm days.

Boat hire dominates the appeal here. You'll need to book ahead, particularly in summer weekends. Allow half a day minimum to get comfortable with steering and locks if you've not done it before. It's not expensive by UK standards, though nothing's cheap these days. The marina sits just under a mile from Pencelli Castle Caravan Park, making it a natural add-on to a longer Powys trip. Brecon itself has decent pubs and supplies, which matters if you're planning to moor up for a picnic.

The real draw? You're on a functioning canal away from crowds, with proper Beacons scenery closing in as you move away from town.
