Turney Cliff Hill

The walk up Turney Cliff Hill rewards you with proper Pennine views - moorland stretching out toward Skipton with that distinctive grit stone character the area's famous for. It's a modest peak by Lake District standards, but that's exactly what makes it worthwhile. No queues, no visitor centre nonsense, just a straightforward fell walk that takes maybe an hour from the road.

What you get at the top is genuine. On clear days the vista opens up nicely across the Ribble Valley. The path itself is well-trodden but never feels crowded - the kind of walk where you might see a handful of other people all afternoon. It's proper moorland walking: boggy in places, steep enough to feel like you've earned it, manageable enough that families with older kids won't struggle.

Walkers and fell runners will get the most from this. It's not a destination attraction - no café, no interpretive boards, no Instagram moment - so come prepared with map and boots. Allow a couple of hours if you want to properly explore the plateau at the top.

Staying at Thornton Hall Country Park, less than a mile away, makes this an obvious morning outing before heading to Skipton for lunch. The proximity to Hedgerow Luxury Glamping and Shay Gate Farm means you've got decent accommodation nearby if you're planning a weekend's walking in the area. Best visited in settled weather when the ground's firmer underfoot.
