High Close Hill

Standing 567 metres above the Pennine foothills, this unassuming fell offers proper views across the Forest of Bowland without the crowds you'll find on Pen-y-ghent or Ingleborough. The climb from Skipton isn't particularly taxing - about an hour of steady walking through rough pasture and moorland - but the final approach can be boggy after rain.

From the summit, you get sweeping panoramas north towards the Yorkshire Dales and west across Lancashire's rolling countryside. On clear days, you can spot the distinctive profile of Pendle Hill to the south. It's the sort of place that rewards early risers with spectacular sunrises and few other people about.

Walkers looking for a moderate challenge will find this spot well worth the effort, though families with young children might struggle with the unmarked paths and rough terrain. The lack of proper footpaths means decent boots are essential, and navigation skills come in handy when the mist rolls in.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around the area - Thornton Hall Country Park or Holgates Ribble Valley are both within reasonable driving distance - this makes for a cracking half-day adventure. Just don't expect facilities or waymarked routes. This is proper fell walking territory where you earn your views.
