Trwyn Penmon Point

The drive out to Penmon Point feels like you're heading off the edge of Anglesey altogether - narrow lanes, stone walls, and suddenly the Irish Sea opens up in front of you. This is proper windswept coastal scenery, the kind where you need to grip your jacket and squint against the spray.

Penmon Point itself is a working lighthouse perched on red sandstone cliffs, with a Romanesque church dating back centuries tucked in nearby. You can't go inside the lighthouse, but the walk around the point gives you genuine 360-degree views across the Menai Strait towards Snowdonia. On a clear day it's the sort of vista that makes the journey worthwhile. On a grey day - and there are plenty of those - it's moody and atmospheric in a different way altogether.

The whole visit takes perhaps an hour unless you're the type to sit for ages reading the interpretation boards. Kids might find it a bit bleak, though teenagers into drama and wild weather could get into it. The footpath itself is straightforward enough, though it can get muddy and the wind is relentless.

Beaumaris sits just a couple of miles inland - you can pick it up before or after, making this an easy addition to a broader coastal loop. If you're staying at Plas Yn Llangoed or Kingsbridge Caravan Park nearby, it's worth the half-hour potter out. Bring a windproof and realistic expectations about the weather, and you'll have a decent afternoon.
