Traeth Penmon | Penmon Beach

The walk down to Penmon Beach rewards you with one of Anglesey's most dramatic stretches of sand and shale. It's no gentle stroll - the path descends properly steep, and you'll feel it in your legs on the way back up. But that very inaccessibility is what makes it special. You get far fewer visitors than you'd find at more mainstream Anglesey beaches, which means space to breathe and explore without fighting through crowds.

Once you're down there, the beach itself is a mix of golden sand and dark shale platforms, with rock pools scattered across the foreshore when the tide's out. The views back towards Beaumaris and across the Menai Strait are genuinely fine, particularly on clear days when you can see right across to Snowdonia. Birdwatchers will want to time their visit for migration periods - this is proper wildlife country.

Realistic time allowance is a good two hours if you want to explore the pools and do the walk without rushing. Families with young children should consider their fitness honestly - it's not a quick dash. The nearest decent facilities are back in Beaumaris, so bring what you need with you.

If you're camping nearby at Plas Yn Llangoed or Kingsbridge, this is absolutely worth the effort. It works well as a morning trip combined with Penmon Point itself, which sits just along the coast and has the old priory and lighthouse to poke around. The scramble down is steep enough to be interesting without being dangerous, and that effort investment means you'll actually appreciate what you find.
