Castell Aberlleiniog

Scrambling through thick undergrowth near Beaumaris, you'll find the scanty remains of what was once a proper Norman motte and bailey castle. Castell Aberlleiniog won't win any prizes for dramatic ruins - there's barely enough stonework left to photograph - but the earthworks tell a story if you know what you're looking for.

Built around 1080, this was one of the early Norman attempts to control Anglesey before Edward I got serious about Welsh castles. The artificial mound still rises impressively from the surrounding farmland, though brambles have claimed most of it now. History buffs will appreciate the strategic position overlooking the Menai Strait, but casual visitors might wonder what all the fuss is about.

Getting there requires a bit of detective work and sturdy boots. There's no visitor centre, no car park, and definitely no tearoom. You're essentially visiting someone's back garden, so respect the landowner and stick to public footpaths.

Families staying at nearby holiday parks like Plas Yn Llangoed or Kingsbridge Caravan Park could combine this with Beaumaris Castle for a proper castle day out. The kids will much prefer the intact towers and dungeons there, but older children interested in archaeology might enjoy the treasure hunt aspect of finding this forgotten fortress. Allow thirty minutes tops unless you're planning a proper survey.
