Trashes Wood

The woodland around Trashes Wood, just outside Bishops Castle, is proper walking country. Ancient broadleaf trees dominate the landscape here - oak, ash, birch - creating that wonderful dappled light you get in Welsh forests. It's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of traffic.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. What you get is access to genuine woodland, the kind locals have walked through for generations. Trails wind between the trees, though don't expect marked routes or information boards. You'll need a decent map or offline GPS if you're planning to explore properly.

This is squarely for walkers and anyone after a quiet woodland wander. Kids might enjoy it for an hour or so if they're the tree-climbing type, but there's no playground nonsense here. If you want something more structured for younger visitors, you'd be better served by a dedicated country park.

Stay at Foxholes Campsite & Cabins just 0.9 miles away in Bishops Castle - genuinely handy for morning walks. Woodbatch Camping & Glamping (2.5 miles) offers a bit more comfort if you need it. The woodland sits well within a broader exploration of the Shropshire Hills, accessible from various glamping spots dotted across the region.

Go early, especially weekends. The peace of the place is the whole appeal, and midday brings the casual ramblers.
