Traeth Borth-y-Gest

The beach at Borth-y-Gest sits just outside Porthmadog and does exactly what a Welsh coastal village should do - gives you proper sand, a working harbour, and enough character to justify the drive. It's a working beach, really. You'll see fishing boats, the odd bit of maritime bustle, families mucking about in rock pools when the tide's out. The village itself is small enough that you won't feel overwhelmed but substantial enough that there's a café or two and somewhere to grab chips.

Walkers will find the coastal path accessible from here, leading off along the Snowdonia coastline with decent views back towards Portmeirion and the estuary. Don't expect drama - this isn't Barmouth or Criccieth. What you get is quieter, less touristy, which is precisely the appeal if you're tired of the seaside circus.

The beach works best at mid to low tide when the sand opens up properly. At high water it's fairly pebbly and cramped. Summer weekends draw families from the nearby caravan parks - Tyddyn Llwyn and Garreg Goch are practically on the doorstep - but even then it's manageable. Borth-y-Gest lacks the polished infrastructure of bigger resorts. There are no lifeguards listed, no formal amenities that I can find. Bring what you need.

If you're basing yourself at one of the holiday parks ringing Porthmadog, this is an easy fifteen-minute amble and worth doing on your first morning. Combine it with a walk up to Portmeirion or a potter round the town itself. Two hours here is about right unless you're serious about the coastal path.
