Tower 7

You'll find Tower 7 standing alone in the Suffolk countryside east of Woodbridge, a squat concrete structure that looks nothing like the medieval keeps most tourists expect. It's a Second World War pillbox, one of hundreds built across Britain's east coast to repel a German invasion that never came. The tower itself is spare - thick walls, narrow gun slits, and enough space inside to remind you how cramped life must have been for the soldiers posted here during 1940-41.

Walkers and history buffs will get the most from this one. It's not a sprawling visitor attraction with cafes and gift shops. There's no interpretation board, no admission fee as far as anyone can tell - you simply turn up and have a look around. The real value comes from standing here and understanding the fear and preparation that gripped this region eighty years ago.
