Tower 6

Tower 6 sits quietly on the Suffolk coast near Woodbridge, one of a chain of Martello towers built as a defence against Napoleon's invasion that never came. It's a squat, circular brick structure - the sort of thing that stops you mid-walk and makes you wonder what on earth it was actually for. These towers were everywhere along the east coast, and Tower 6 is one of the better-preserved examples if you're serious about Napoleonic-era military history.

The tower itself is modest but solid, and the real appeal is the walk to get there rather than the building itself. History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, especially if you're already exploring the Woodbridge area. It won't take long - maybe half an hour to look around properly - but it tells you something genuine about this stretch of coastline and the paranoia of the Regency period.

If you're camping at Savage Glamping just down the road, or any of the other sites within five miles like Carlton Meres or Birds and Bees, it's an easy afternoon detour. Don't expect a visitor centre or much interpretation on site, though. Bring a decent guidebook or do your homework beforehand, because Tower 6 rewards those who come prepared with some context. It's the sort of stop that makes sense as part of a bigger coastal ramble rather than a destination in itself.
