Tower 4

Tower 4 sits just outside Woodbridge in Suffolk, one of those Second World War defensive structures that still dot the East Anglian landscape. It's a squat, circular concrete pill box - the kind the Home Guard would have manned if the Germans had actually invaded. Standing in front of it now feels oddly mundane, which is precisely the point. It's not dramatic - no climbing inside, no museum displays - just the thing itself, weathered and purposeful. History buffs will find it genuinely interesting; kids will get bored after ten minutes unless they're already fascinated by the war. Walkers passing through the area might easily miss it, though it makes a decent landmark for a longer ramble around Woodbridge.

The site appears to be freely accessible, though do check locally before making the trip - some of these historic structures have access restrictions. It won't take long, maybe thirty minutes if you're really lingering. Pair it with a walk into Woodbridge itself, which has proper charm along the River Deben, or use it as a waypoint on a longer route between the nearby campsites like Brick Kiln Farm or Carlton Meres. The real value here is fitting it into a broader exploration rather than treating it as a destination in itself.
