Tower 11

Tower 11 is a Second World War radar station that sits on the edge of Woodbridge in Suffolk, a proper bit of military archaeology that most visitors miss entirely. It's essentially the concrete foundations and steel framework of what was once a cutting-edge air defence installation - the sort of thing that helped win the war but gets forgotten the moment the bunting comes down.

You won't find much interpretation on site, which is both frustrating and rather brilliant. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no recorded commentary telling you what to think. What you get instead is the raw infrastructure itself - squat, functional, slightly eerie. History types will find it genuinely fascinating; families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming after ten minutes unless they're already into wartime stuff.

The site is free and accessible during daylight hours, though you'll want to check locally before driving out as facilities and formal access can be patchy. Allow 30-45 minutes to properly look around and get a feel for the place. It works well as a brief detour if you're already exploring the Woodbridge area or staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Savage Glamping is barely three miles away, and Carlton Meres or Birds and Bees Campsite are only slightly further.

Bring a good book on wartime Suffolk if you want context, or simply wander and imagine what 1940 looked like from this exact spot. It's the sort of visit that sticks with you more than the conventional tourist attractions.
