Tow Scar

The walk up Tow Scar is a proper lung-buster, but the limestone escarpment that greets you at the top makes every gasping step worthwhile. You're looking at sheer white cliffs rising suddenly from moorland near Carnforth, and the views across Lancashire and Yorkshire open up in ways that smaller hills simply don't deliver.

It's not a technical climb - more of a steep trudge through rough grass and heather - but it punches well above its weight for effort versus reward. Allow a couple of hours return from the nearest car park. There's no visitor facilities at the peak itself - come prepared with water and proper boots because the ground gets boggy. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the weather's more reliable and the moorland's in bloom.
