Torbhain Mòr

The walk up Torbhain Mòr isn't technically difficult, but it demands respect. This Argyll peak sits inland from Oban, rising 2,457 feet with views that stretch across the Sound of Mull on a clear day. What strikes you most is how quickly the landscape shifts - you start in managed forestry, then suddenly you're above the tree line with nothing but moorland and distant sea.

The ascent takes roughly two hours from the car park, following a clear enough path that doesn't require specialist kit. It's not a summit that stops you cold with its drama, but the walk itself rewards steady legs and decent boots. On the way up you'll pass through different habitats - birch woodland giving way to open hillside - which makes it more interesting than a straight slog up a bald cone.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Oban Holiday Park or Tanunda Pods and want a proper half-day adventure without driving hours. Walkers will get their money's worth. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a grind unless they're already mountain-trained. The Scottish Highlands do this sort of mid-range peak well - substantial enough to feel earned, accessible enough that you're not hiring a guide.

Weather matters enormously. Low cloud will rob you of the views entirely, and the exposed upper section gets windy. Time your visit for an anticyclone if you can. Early autumn tends to be reliable. The nearest town, Oban, has everything you need for supplies beforehand.
