Topping Hill Wood

The woodland paths through Topping Hill Wood feel properly isolated given how close you are to Whitby. Tall conifers dominate the higher sections, but venture deeper and you'll find mixed woodland that changes with the seasons - bluebell carpets in spring, dense green cover by summer. The walks aren't marked with military precision, so bring a map or keep your phone charged. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a decent loop without rushing.

It's a solid spot for families who don't need constant entertainment or facilities. Children old enough to walk without stopping every five minutes will get on fine here; toddlers might find it a bit dull. History types won't find much to gnaw on - this is working woodland, not heritage land. For serious walkers, it slots well into a longer route across the North York Moors. Free access, no facilities that I could find, and parking is limited to a handful of spaces at the entrance.

If you're based at Broadings Farm or Whitby Holiday Park, this makes a decent morning out to blow off steam before heading down to the seafront. Northcliffe & Seaview Holiday Parks are a touch further but still close enough for a quick woodland ramble. The wood itself feels like somewhere locals use rather than tourists, which is either a point in its favour or not, depending on what you want. It's not going to be the highlight of your week, but it's free, accessible, and surprisingly peaceful for the Yorkshire coast.
