Top Lake

Top Lake sits quietly on the Hampshire countryside, a modest expanse of water that draws walkers and bird-watchers rather than crowds. It's the sort of place where you'll spot mallards and the occasional heron if you're lucky, with a decent path running around it that takes the better part of an hour at a leisurely pace.

The water itself is fairly shallow and murky - don't expect Alpine clarity - but that's part of its appeal. It feels properly wild, not manicured. There's a car park nearby and benches dotted along the walk, which makes it accessible for families with younger kids, though they'll likely find it a touch dull if they're hoping for ducks to hand-feed or a playground.

It works well as a morning outing if you're staying at Beechen Glamping, just six miles south near Southampton. Pair it with a longer exploration of the New Forest or the Test Valley for a proper day out. On its own, give it 90 minutes if you walk the full circuit and linger a bit. Early morning is your best bet for wildlife and to avoid the thin smattering of other visitors.

Bring decent shoes - the ground gets boggy in patches, especially after rain. It's free to visit and there are no facilities right at the lake itself, so stock up in Southampton beforehand. Worth the detour if you're after some quiet time and don't mind a fairly understated landscape.
