Manor Farm

Manor Farm sits just outside Southampton and is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a proper working farm with genuine character - the kind where you can still see how rural Hampshire ticked along before the commuter belt swallowed everything else.

What you get here depends on the season and what the farm's doing that day. There's livestock about, and you can usually have a wander round the grounds if access is permitted. Families with young children find it worth an hour or so, particularly if the animals are in the mood to cooperate. Don't expect theme park facilities or even a gift shop - this is authentic, ungussied-up farming life. Kids either love the hands-on reality of it or get restless after twenty minutes. There's no way to sugar-coat that.

It works brilliantly as a half-day break from the caravan parks clustered nearby - Mercury Holiday Park and Sunnydale Farm Caravan Park are both within three miles, so you're not burning petrol on a long drive. Dibles Park is equally close if you're based there. For walkers, the surrounding countryside is decent enough for stretching your legs before heading back to the site.

The honest truth is this isn't a polished attraction. There's no website to speak of, no fancy signage, no admission charges listed anywhere. Ring ahead if you're keen - locals in Southampton will know more about current access than any online source. It's the sort of stop that rewards the curious but won't impress anyone after the flash of the New Forest.
