Swanwick Lakes

A chain of flooded gravel pits turned nature reserve, Swanwick Lakes sits just outside Southampton and delivers far more than you'd expect from what sounds like an industrial leftover. The water is the main draw - crystal clear in places, fringed with reeds and dotted with islands that attract wading birds, wildfowl, and the occasional heron if you're lucky enough to time it right.

There are proper walking trails threading between the lakes, mostly flat and easy going, which suits families with younger kids or anyone after a gentle couple of hours in the open air. Birdwatchers will spend half a day here without complaint. Bring binoculars and a field guide. The paths are well-maintained and clearly marked, though after heavy rain some stretches get boggy.

It's free to visit, which is the first good thing you'll hear about it. Parking is straightforward. You can knock out a decent circuit in ninety minutes, or dawdle for three hours if you're the type to stop and stare. The reserve punches above its weight for somewhere so close to a major town - proper peaceful, feels properly removed from Southampton's sprawl.

Stay at one of the caravan parks scattered within a few miles - Mercury Holiday Park or Sunnydale Farm Caravan Park are closest - and you've got a solid morning activity that won't monopolise your day. It's the sort of place that works well alongside beach trips to the Solent coast or a wander round Southampton Water. Not a destination in itself, but a genuine bonus to a longer break.
