Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve

A string of former gravel pits turned into something genuinely worth an afternoon - that's Swanwick Lakes, just outside Southampton. You get a chain of shallow lakes ringed by woodland and grassland, all managed as a nature reserve. It's the sort of place where you'll spot great crested grebes, herons, and if you're lucky, kingfishers flashing blue across the water.

The walking is straightforward rather than spectacular. Well-maintained paths loop around the lakes, taking anything from an hour to three hours depending on which bits you tackle. The terrain is flat, so it suits families with younger kids or anyone after a gentle ramble without the navigation headache. Birdwatchers will linger longest - bring binoculars and a field guide. Dog walkers are obviously welcome, though keep them under control around the water.

Admission appears to be free, which is reason alone to stop here if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Mercury Holiday Park, Dibles, or Sunnydale Farm are all within a couple of miles. It's not a dramatic landscape, but there's something calming about the way the water catches light between the trees, especially in autumn when the banks turn copper and gold.

The reserve sits on the edge of the New Forest's influence, so pair it with proper forest walks elsewhere if you want something more challenging. On its own merits though, Swanwick delivers: proper local wildlife watching without the crowds you'd find at more famous reserves, and zero effort to organize.
