Tom Dubh

Tom Dubh sits just outside Pitlochry, a straightforward hill walk that doesn't demand specialist kit or a full day's commitment. The peak itself isn't dramatic - you're looking at around 550 metres - but it delivers decent views across the Tummel Valley and towards the Cairngorms on a clear day. Most walkers knock it out in two to three hours return, starting from near the village and following a mix of paths and hillside. It's the sort of walk that appeals to people who want some proper exercise without the scrambling or exposure of higher peaks.

You'll get the best out of Tom Dubh if you're comfortable on a moorland path and don't mind a bit of bog underfoot. Families with older kids find it manageable, though younger ones might struggle with the monotony of the ascent - it's graft rather than drama. Spring through autumn works fine, though summer midges can be grim and winter needs appropriate preparation.

Pitlochry itself is well-served for accommodation, with several caravan and camping options within spitting distance - Faskally Woods Holiday Park sits just 1.1 miles away, making this an ideal morning or afternoon outing if you're based nearby. River Tilt Park and Blair Castle Caravan Park are equally close and offer decent base camps. The walk pairs well with exploring Pitlochry itself or the Pass of Killiecrankie a short drive north. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's a solid, no-fuss Perthshire walk that ticks the boxes.
