Todmanhaw

The walk up Todmanhaw from Clitheroe is a proper little Lancashire workout, but the payoff's worth the leg burn. This isn't a famous fell - you won't find coaches dropping walkers here - which is exactly why it works. The summit sits just under 350 metres, and on a clear day you get sweeping views across the Ribble Valley toward Pendle Hill, with the Trough of Bowland rolling away to the northwest.

The route itself is straightforward if a touch steep in places. Most people tackle it as a loop from the Clitheroe area, maybe two hours total depending on fitness and how often you stop for breath. It's the kind of walk that suits fell-runners and families with older kids equally well - nothing technical, just honest climbing through open moorland. Spring and early summer are cracking for wildflowers along the lower sections.

If you're camping at one of the Ribble Valley sites - Peaks and Pods or Hedgerow are both within three miles - Todmanhaw slots nicely into a weekend itinerary without stealing a whole day. Pair it with an afternoon exploring Clitheroe itself, or a longer hike over to Pendle Hill if you're after something more ambitious. It won't take your breath away like the Lake District proper, but that's the point. You get genuine fell walking without the crowds or the parking nightmares. Just bring a map and sensible boots.
