Tobys Fold

The stone walls at Tobys Fold tell a story that most walkers hurry past without noticing. This is a drove road shelter, built centuries ago when drovers moved livestock across the Pennines - basically a rest stop for tired sheep and the men herding them. It's a proper piece of working history, not some sanitised museum piece.

You'll find it near Carnforth, up in the North Yorkshire hills where the landscape turns serious. The fold itself is modest - a rectangular enclosure of dry stone walls, weathered grey and lean. But stand there long enough and you start imagining the chaos: hundreds of animals penned in for the night, voices calling across the dark, fires smoking. It's the kind of thing that sticks with walkers and history types more than it sticks with kids, if we're honest.

There's no admission fee and no opening hours because you just turn up. Best visited on a clear day when you can see across the valleys. Allow an hour or so if you're making it part of a longer walk - it doesn't demand much time on its own, but the surrounding countryside is proper walking country.
