Tiverton

The Iron Age hillfort at Tiverton sits on high ground just outside the town itself, commanding views across the Devon landscape. It's not exactly dramatic - no towering ramparts or obvious fortifications leap out at you. What you get instead is a proper slice of archaeology: earthwork banks and ditches that tell you someone cared enough about this spot to defend it over two thousand years ago.

Walkers will get the most from a visit here. The site rewards you with long sight lines across the Exe Valley, and the walk up isn't punishing enough to put off families, though the ground can get muddy after rain. Allow an hour to properly poke around and take in the views - much longer and you'll be inventing things that aren't there.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, which is both the appeal and the limitation. Access appears free, but check locally in Tiverton town centre first - the site isn't signposted like a main attraction. It works as a solo expedition rather than a day-out destination, particularly if you're already exploring the Mid Devon area. Historically engaged types will appreciate standing where Iron Age people once stood, but casual visitors might find themselves wondering what exactly they're looking at within twenty minutes.
