Tickering Hill

The walk up Tickering Hill from Harrogate is a proper leg-stretcher, rewarded by views across the Stray and out towards the Pennines on a clear day. It's nothing dramatic - Yorkshire limestone country, rolling rather than dramatic - but that's precisely the point. You get moorland, open fell, and genuine quiet without needing to drive an hour to the Lake District.

The ascent takes about forty minutes at a steady pace. It's steep enough to feel like proper exercise but not so brutal you'll be cursing halfway up. The ground underfoot varies from clear footpaths to scrappier moorland depending on which route you take, so wear decent boots. In autumn the bracken turns bronze and catches the light beautifully; winter is windier and more exposed.

Walkers will love it, particularly those who prefer solitude to crowds. Families with older kids (eight plus) will find it manageable as an afternoon outing. The views aren't jaw-dropping enough to warrant a special trip on their own, but if you're staying at Rudding Holiday Park or Wighill Park Glamping, it's an excellent half-day walk. The nearby Harrogate Caravan Park puts you within easy range too.

Bring water, as there's nothing at the top. Check the forecast - when it's grey and drizzly, the appeal drops considerably. Time it for late morning, do the walk, and you're back for lunch.
