Green Howe

A Bronze Age burial mound rising from the Yorkshire moorland near Harrogate, Green Howe is one of those archaeological sites that rewards the slightly detoured walk. You're looking at a low, grass-covered earthwork - unassuming at first glance, but stand on it and you're literally standing on ground that's been undisturbed for roughly 4,000 years. Someone was buried here in the Bronze Age, and that's a proper privilege.

It's the kind of place that appeals most to archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers exploring the Stray around Harrogate. Kids might find it dull after five minutes unless they're into the whole 'ancient burial' angle - there's no interpretation board, no visitor centre, just the mound itself and your imagination. Bring a decent map because signposting is minimal, and the site sits in relatively open countryside where it's easy to walk straight past.

Free to visit, obviously - there's no gate, no warden, nothing. Allow 30 minutes if you're combining it with a wider walk across the Stray. Harrogate itself is close enough that you could base yourself at Rudding Holiday Park or Harrogate Caravan Park and make this a morning detour between proper attractions. Best visited in drier weather when the moorland isn't waterlogged. Winter walks work too if you don't mind the chill. It's a bit specialist, not a headline draw, but if you're the type who likes standing where Bronze Age people stood, it's absolutely worth finding.
