York Hill

The view from York Hill won't take your breath away the moment you arrive, but give yourself twenty minutes and you'll understand why locals keep coming back. It's a proper vantage point above Harrogate, the kind of place where you can actually see what the town's built on and where it's spreading towards. On a clear day the Pennines sit on the horizon like a promise.

There's not much infrastructure up here - no visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. You climb, you look, you breathe. It's the sort of walk that works for families with older kids rather than toddlers, though it's hardly a lung-buster. Allow an hour all told, less if you're just after the views and don't fancy lingering. Free to visit, obviously.

What makes it useful for a caravan holiday is geography. If you're based at Rudding Holiday Park or Harrogate Caravan Park - both within two miles - York Hill gives you that essential hill-walk tick without driving anywhere. It fits neatly into the Harrogate circuit: you do the hill in the morning, then the town proper in the afternoon. The surrounding countryside rolls nicely, which means if you're staying longer you've got decent walking terrain all around.

The Pennine views are worth the trip if you're planning serious walking trips into the hills. If you just want Instagram views without effort, you'll find the same landscape elsewhere. But as a local's escape five minutes from the caravan park? It's well worth twenty minutes of your time.
