Smiler's Gorse

The woodland around Smiler's Gorse, just outside Harrogate, is a proper bit of North Yorkshire forest that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a wander. It's accessible walking through mixed woodland with enough variation to keep things interesting without being taxing - the sort of place where you might spot a deer or at least hear the woodland properly without traffic noise.

The appeal here is straightforward: if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Rudding Holiday Park or Wighill Park Glamping, this gives you a legitimate reason to get out of the van and into the trees for an hour or so. It's the kind of walk families with younger children can manage without complaint, and older kids won't find it babyish. There's nothing massively dramatic to see - no viewpoints or ruins - but that's rather the point. It's working woodland, not a museum.

Go in autumn when the light's better and the mud slightly less of a commitment. Spring's decent too if you time it after the heaviest rain. Weekday mornings are quieter if you're the type who wants to actually hear the wood rather than navigate around other people's dogs.
